Maybe 48 Is Late. I’m Building Anyway.

09 SEPTEMBER 2026

I just turned 48.

In less than two years, I’ll be 50.

And strangely, that doesn’t scare me.

I’m okay with getting older.

I’ve accepted my age with grace. The lines, the changes, the fact that my energy isn’t exactly 😂 what it was at 28.

What sometimes gets me isn’t the number.

It’s this thought:

Am I starting too late?

Because at 48, I’m still building.

Still trying new things.

Still thinking about additional income streams.

Still dreaming about businesses, properties, places I want to live, work I want to do, and the kind of life I want to create for myself.

Sometimes I look around and think…

Shouldn’t I have figured all of this out by now?

Maybe.

But then I remember what my 30s actually looked like.

My 30s Weren’t My Building Years

My 30s were survival years.

That was the decade when I became a mother.

It was also the decade when my marriage fell apart after infidelity.

I was still an OFW, raising my son abroad and trying to keep everything going.

And raising a child overseas wasn’t cheap.

His primary education alone cost a fortune.

Our yearly flat rental could probably have built a simple house back home in the Philippines.

There were bills.

School fees.

Rent.

Food.

Work.

Motherhood.

And all the ordinary expenses that somehow become very unordinary when only one person is carrying most of them.

So when I think about why I wasn’t aggressively building businesses or investments in my 30s, the answer is actually pretty simple.

I was busy surviving.

I had dreams then too.

Of course I did.

But sometimes dreams have to sit quietly in the corner while you deal with what’s directly in front of you.

And for many years, that’s exactly what mine did.

Life Looks Different at 48

My son is a teenager now.

He doesn’t need me in the same way he did when he was five or eight or ten.

I’m still his mom, obviously.

I still worry.

😂 I still pay the bills.

But I have something now that I didn’t have much of when he was little:

a little more freedom with my time.

And I’ve realized that I’m slowly using that space to return to things I once wanted for myself.

Some of those dreams have changed.

Some don’t matter to me anymore.

And some have quietly followed me all these years.

Those are the ones I’m picking up again.

Maybe I’m Not Starting. Maybe I’m Returning.

I’ve been thinking about that lately.

We often say we’re starting over.

But maybe that’s not always what we’re doing.

Maybe sometimes we’re returning to the woman we were before life became so demanding.

Before motherhood took most of our attention.

Before a marriage ended.

Before bills became the priority.

Before survival took over.

That woman didn’t disappear.

She just had other things to take care of.

And now, at 48, I’m finally giving some of her dreams my attention again.

Not all at once.

And definitely not perfectly.

I’m still working my VA jobs. That’s still my bread and butter.

I’m still raising my son.

I still have bills and mortgages and responsibilities.

I’m not sitting somewhere with millions in the bank asking myself what hobby I should try next.

😂 This is still very much ordinary life.

I’m simply building alongside it.

Quietly.

One thing at a time.

But Is 48 Too Late?

Maybe for some things.

I don’t want to pretend time doesn’t matter.

It does.

I have fewer working years ahead of me than I had at 30.

I have to be more thoughtful about where I put my money.

I have to protect my energy.

I can’t afford to chase every shiny idea that comes along.

And yes, sometimes I wish I had started certain things ten or fifteen years earlier.

Imagine the compounding. 😂 But I didn’t.

And there’s no investment product for getting your 30s back.

So I have two choices.

I can spend my late 40s regretting what I didn’t build earlier.

Or I can use the years I have now.

I choose the second one.

I’m Still Building. I’m Still Dreaming.

I don’t know how everything I’m working toward will turn out.

Some things may work.

Others may quietly disappear from my plans.

That’s part of trying.

I’m not building because I’m certain I’ll succeed.

I’m building because I finally have a little more room to try.

And perhaps I’ve reached an age where I’m also less afraid of trying and looking foolish.

At 48, I’ve already survived enough things to know that one failed idea isn’t going to destroy me.

😂 So yes.

I’m 48.

Soon, I’ll be 50.

And I’m still building.

Still dreaming.

Still curious about what else I can create with this life.

Maybe I’m late.

But this is when I arrived.

And I’d rather start from here than spend another ten years wishing I had.

If you’re a solo mom who feels like everyone else had a head start, remember this:

The years you spent surviving were not wasted years. But when life finally gives you a little room again, don’t be afraid to use it for yourself.

You don’t have to solve everything today. You just have to keep moving - one small, wise step at a time.

That’s one of the reasons I created North Star PH - to share real stories and practical lessons from work, money, rebuilding and creating additional income streams, while figuring things out one ordinary day at a time. And if you're curious about the ebooks I've written along the way -real stories from the properties, the income streams, and everything in between - you can check them out here: northstarph.org/ebook.
