One Salary Should Never Carry

the Weight of Your Child’s Future

22 JULY 2026

If you’re an OFW single mom, can I ask you something?

Have you ever caught yourself thinking,

“As long as I keep my job, we’ll be okay.”

I used to believe that too.

For years, my monthly salary carried almost everything-our daily expenses,

my son’s needs, family responsibilities, and my hopes for the future.

The problem?

It was my only source of income.

I didn't realize how risky that was until much later.

Looking back, these are the lessons I wish I had learned while I was still working abroad:

One salary is not a backup plan.

A good job can still disappear unexpectedly.

Learning one new skill today can open doors tomorrow.

A small second income is better than no second income at all.

Preparing early is easier than rebuilding later.

Notice that none of these require becoming rich overnight.

They simply require starting.

Maybe that’s learning a digital skill.

Maybe it’s selling digital products.

Maybe it’s building a small rental business.

Maybe it’s something completely different.

The goal isn’t to replace your OFW income tomorrow.
