Am I Building Too Much for Tomorrow?

05 AUGUST 2026

Lately, I’ve been asking myself a question I don’t have an answer to.

How much of today should we sacrifice for a tomorrow we’re not even sure we’ll see?

As a solo mom by choice, I know my son’s future is my responsibility.

A year ago, I made a decision that gave me a lot of peace.

I stopped expecting financial support from my ex-husband.

The truth is, he hadn’t really been supporting our son financially anyway. He has built a new family, and instead of holding on to expectations that only led to disappointment, I chose to let them go.

Oddly enough, letting go didn’t make me feel weaker.

It made me feel freer.

From that point on, I stopped thinking about what someone else should do.

I focused on what I could do.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons I keep building.

I dream of having multiple income streams. Not because I’m chasing a luxurious lifestyle, but because I’m trying to build a life with more choices and fewer worries.

A life where I can provide for my son.

A life where an unexpected emergency doesn’t turn everything upside down.

A life where I have the freedom to work because I want to, not because I have no other choice.

Will I get there?

I honestly don’t know.

I hope so.

I really do.

But building a future takes time.

It takes energy.

It takes money.

It takes saying “not now” to things I could enjoy today.

And that’s where I sometimes pause.

How much should I keep building?

At what point do I stop chasing the next goal and simply enjoy the life I’m already living?

I don’t have the answer.

I don’t want to spend my whole life preparing for tomorrow while forgetting to live today.

But I also don’t want to enjoy today so much that I leave tomorrow to chance.

Maybe life isn’t about finding a perfect balance.

Maybe it’s about paying attention to the season we’re in.

Some seasons ask us to build.

Some seasons invite us to slow down.

Perhaps wisdom is knowing the difference.

For now, I’m still building.

But I’m also trying to notice the small moments that make life worth living.

A slow morning coffee.

A conversation with my son.

Feeding stray dogs on my birthday.

An afternoon walk.

A quiet sunset after a long day.

Those moments don’t delay the dream.

They remind me why I’m building it in the first place.

Maybe that’s the balance I’m looking for.

Not choosing between tomorrow and today.

But making sure I don’t lose either while I’m fortunate enough to have both.

If you’re a solo mom, remember this:

You don’t have to solve everything today. Just prepare a little better than you did yesterday.

That’s one of the reasons I created North Star-to share practical lessons on rebuilding finances, creating additional income streams, and helping solo moms feel a little more prepared for whatever life brings.
